You buy a home with a great looking bay window. You think about all of the great ways you can decorate it. After this you think of shades or curtains, after that you start to try a few shops searching and also determining prices. Later the reality of actually dressing this beautiful window sinks in. Ready made window treatments just will not give you the look that you want!

If this is the situation then roman shades are usually a really great way to dress your bay window. If your window is nice and clear all around maybe curtains will be an excellent way to go, particularly long to the floor curtains. Longer curtains really dress a window and provide a hint of extravagance. They also make the space feel warmer in the winter.

Tips on measuring for shades

You must take a lot of care when you are measuring shades to match a bay window. If you have this incorrect then your shades will go straight in to the garbage. Often they can not be altered, especially if they are too narrow or perhaps short.

If you are measuring for roman shades then remember to leave a gap of around an inch between the shades. This is to make allowance for the ties being more bulky as they’re pulled up. They’re going to start to push into one another.

A tiny tip I find helpful is to add an additional half inch to the drop ( length ) measurement. The actual shades, once constructed and put up appear to shrink a little bit. So adding it on now means it’s rather more likely to fit spot on once made.

Measuring for the purpose of curtains in a Bay Window covering

This is a hard one so pay attention. The fashion lately has been to install decorative bay window rods. My recommendation is simple, think again because they are far from straightforward to fit properly. Consequently the curtains fight to open and close by means of the special passing rings. And so what do I recommend? My favorite means of decorating a bay is to fit top boards. These are simply six inch by one inch timber boards. You fit them over your window on brackets much like fitting a shelf.

Then hang curtains from the bottom of the boards on a curtain track. Then cover the top board using a fabric covered pelmet or cornice. They can be manufactured in all styles and sizes and look extremely modern or more classic.

So the steps to fitting curtains in a bay window are :

1. Cut and then fit the top boards in the bay over the windows.

2. Next, determine the width and take the drop ( length ) measurement from the track to the floor.

3. Next determine the leading edges of the top boards for the purpose of making a pelmet / cornice.

So you now have all the sizes you want for making the curtains as well as top treatment. The next action would be to choose your material and have them made.
