Bathroom Tiles And Their Roots In History
Which room would you select to renovate first? My guess is that you thought “kitchen”, but the humble bathroom comes a close second when it comes to updating the look of your home. Bathroom tiles are very easy to incorporate into new plans, being hygienic, easy to clean and above all , durable.
A look back in time sees the out-house overturned at the end of the 19th century, with the water closet (WC) entering the home as a separate room. The Victorian bathrooms were short on design features, with functionality being the watchword. White glazed porcelain or enamel baths were installed along with toilets and sinks, all having the same clinical look. Bathroom tiles consisted of glazed white porcelain, on the walls in addition to the floors.
The colour white was used primarily to portray the look of cleanliness , it was used in gloss paint and in Carrara marble worktops. Light relief away from all this starkness was the insertion of small black 2” tiles inserted between the hexagonal white floor tiles, providing an underground look .
The 1930s and the onset of Art Deco introduced a splash of colour . Pink, salmon, duck egg blue, primrose yellow and jade were introduced into interior design in the form of bathroom tiles, worktops and wood trims. Chrome accents in the shape of toilet roll holders were great counterparts to the drama of black features and glass handles of the Art Deco theme .
Look no further than Original Style to copy these designs, they are experts in recreating truly impressive tiles for walls and floors. Introduce the dramatic effects of the 1930s without compromising on modern comfort. Tiles in my opinion are the best choice for bathroom design; it’s hard to top their cleanliness and durability. The only maintenance if using a man made tile such as a ceramic or porcelain, is to give it a thorough clean with a good professional cleaner such as Lithofin Wexa and to reseal the grout joints every so often.
